Nicholas Barker

Title: "Tache"
Client: McDonalds

Describing his work as "well-observed fiction", Nicholas' film style incorporates real life subject matter with the sensibilities of still photography. His wealth of directorial credits include some definitive moments in advertising, such as the award winning Carte D'Or "Sunday Lunch" and Centraal Beheer "Cleaning Ladies".

Nicholas trained as an anthropologist before joining the BBC as a radio producer. He went on to TV to create three series for British television: "Washer Whiter" (a history of British culture since WW2 via television advertisements), "Signs of the Times" (a hilarious and harrowing chronicle of family relationships posing as a study of home decorating), and "From A to B" (an infamous study of people and their cars). The latter two mini-series, each five hours in length, rapidly gained cult status in the UK and heralded a new genre in British documentary making. It was also through these documentaries that Nicholas demonstrated his idiosyncratic visual style and highly caustic sense of humour.

Following his BBC work, Nicholas went on to direct his first feature, "Unmade Beds" which received much critical acclaim. "Unmade Beds explodes the conventions of fact-based filmmaking. It is alternatively hilarious and terrifying" - John Horn, Associated Press. "Playing fast and loose with documentary conventions, Barker gives us an often hilarious, sometimes poignant horror story, walking a line between sophisticated genre busting and sneery cheap shot: - The Guardian Barker is also a well regarded expert on contemporary painting an fine art colour photography.

He has collaborated with renowned photographer Martin Parr on a number of photo books, including the universally acclaimed "Living Rooms".
